FCAC TREAT pop-up round up
November was a very busy month for HobbyHouse but a really great one. This time it was across the Tay to St Andrews for the weekend to be part of the TREAT pop-up event as part of FCAC (Fife Contemporary Art and Craft).
The V&A at Dundee and HobbyHouse joined forces to find out the thoughts, ideas and aspirations from the people of St Andrews, Fife and beyond. The event was opened on Friday evening by Philip Long, director of the V&A at Dundee. The work on display and for sale from the local makers was outstanding and was perfectly timed for some Christmas shopping (my Mums present was sorted very easily!)
During the weekend of TREAT, HobbyHouse and the V&A at Dundee were there to have a chat with the visitors to keep them up to date with the happenings of the V&A at Dundee but also to give them an opportunity to share their vision for the city and the V&A at Dundee. This was a great event to get networking with some of the local people with many really interested to getting involved and being part of the project now and when it opens.
Thanks to FCAC and local jewellery maker Jane Gowans for asking HobbyHouse and the V&A at Dundee to take part in the event.
#VAmash round up
This blog is a little late in being popped online but better late than never! In November #VAmash kicked off as part of the NEoN week in Dundee. VAmash was a digital mash up workshop event along with the V&A at Dundee. The purpose of the night was to get the budding digital brains of Dundee together to bash up and mash up ideas and ways of making the V&A at Dundee a digital delight.
The night was a very enjoyable one and a huge success. The V&A and I organized the event along with the help of Chris Wilson from the University of Abertay and Chris van der Kuyl from BrightSolid. Chris van der Kuyl kicked the night off with a really motivational talk about the future of Digital Design in Dundee, Tara from the V&A at Dundee then took to the stage to fill the audience in about the latest news on the V&A at Dundee and the excitement and aims for it to be a really thriving Digital centre for Scotland, the UK and beyond.
The attendee’s of VAmash then had the opportunity to get the brains ticking with a quickfire ’10 questions’ round. This helped to get the first thoughts out in areas from the future of Digital Technology to how the V&A at Dundee is going to be the living room of the city. After a little coffee break and brain refuel it was time to get RIP&MIX’n!
RIP&MIX is a service design tool/method developed by past Master of Design for Services students for Deutsch Telecom. I brought this method to the VAmash to bring the Digital ideas and the V&A at Dundee together. The sharpies, post-its and lego were put to very good use and some really really exciting ideas were developed. These could be as wild and wacky as possible, which made it even more exciting. The teams were made up of people from all backgrounds throughout the city from digital geniuses to local DJCAD students to brain surgeons. The ideas were presented to everyone and are now in a big pot ready for further development at the next VAmash.
A little twitter/storify round up of the night can be seen below. Â Thank you to everyone who tweeted #VAmash and for sharing your thoughts, photos and excitement for the event.

A HUGE thank you has to be said to everyone who attended, to Chris and Chris, and Tara and the team at V&A at Dundee. A special thanks to Café Borsa for being such great hosts for the event. (A great little coffee shop by the McManus in Dundee – check it out!)
Keep you eyes open for news of another VAmash event in the not so distant future and remember to share with any fellow digital “geeks”!
